Remus Grecu’s Dreamlike worlds

Remus Grecu’s art blends a raw, symbolic, almost oneiric visual language with unmatched craftsmanship, creating works that feel both visceral and poetic. His international journey has taken him from underground exhibitions in Eastern Europe to acclaimed showcases across global cultural hubs. Through this trajectory, he has established himself as a distinctive voice, enhanced by a technique worthy of the grand masters, bridging local identity with an anticipation of the universal zeitgeist.

Beyond the art world, Grecu’s sharp eye and exquisite technique—paired with a biting sense of irony—earned him an implicit international recognition in advertising, when he was only in his junior years. In 2009, Ogilvy Frankfurt commissioned him to reinterpret iconic nude works—from Ingres to Manet—for an awareness campaign on anorexia. Exhibited in a reputed German museum, as paintings replicating the original size of the artwork reinterpreted, the project impressed jurors worldwide and was awarded at LIA, Cannes Lions, and The One Show.

1. WHAT WOULD MAKE YOUR SOUL SING? WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

The sight of a herd of white Lusitano stallions running freely across mountainous pastures.

2. A CHILDHOOD STORY THAT ANNOUNCED THE CREATIVE PERSON YOU ARE TODAY

I was around 3 or 4 when my father drew three sketches for me. That moment stayed with me — I knew instantly I would draw and paint for the rest of my life. It was one of those rare awakenings.

3. BEST CONTEXT EVER FOR INSPIRATION WAS

After many sleepless nights, I finally managed to sketch a few strong compositions for the first paintings of this new series. The moment they came together, I knew this would be my international breakthrough.

4. THE PROJECT YOU LOVED MOST

This new series of paintings — because it’s about light, beauty and happiness.

5. THE PROJECT OTHERS LOVED MOST

Each of my solo shows has been received differently — appreciation always depends on the audience. I say this because, ultimately, an artist’s success is shaped by the response of others.

6. THE BEST THING ABOUT ROMANIAN CREATIVITY IS

It might be a kind of hidden wisdom — but when I look at the Romanian art and painting scene, I struggle to actually see it.

7. BEST STATEMENT OF ROMANIAN HUMOR

Do you have a better formula to translate the error in the quote ? Romanian humor is dead. What passes for it now is mostly vulgarity, stupidity, and emptiness. Back when people actually read, our humor was sharper, subtler, more refined. Still, I often think of a line from a 1980s Romanian film—one that resists full translation because it hinges on a grammatical slip: „Fără poezie, viața e pustiu… pustiu… pustiu” (Without poetry, life is the void… the void… the void.”)

Artwork commissioned in his youth by Ogilvy Frankfurt, earning worldwide recognition at top international creativity festivals.

8. ADVICE FOR INTERNATIONAL HEADHUNTERS, RELATED TO ROMANIAN CREATIVES

I wish I had solid advice for international gallerists or headhunters regarding Romanian artists — but to offer that, one would first need to genuinely have Romanian painters in mind. In my view, Romanian “creativity” is 99.99% relevant only within the frame of local cultural identity — and that, unfortunately, is not enough. (And here I am speaking strictly about painting and painters.)

9. BEST PLACE IN BUCHAREST

Nicodim Gallery — because it’s one of the few places where you might encounter something that feels like real art.

10. BEST PLACE IN YOUR COUNTRY

The mountains.

11. MOST DISTURBING CLICHÉ ABOUT ROMANIA, IN THE MEDIA OUTLETS OF THE WORLD IS

Dracula.

12. ROMANIA SHOULD BE KNOWN FOR

Some extraordinary Romanian films were made before 1989, by directors such as Mircea Daneliuc, Alexandru Tatos and Lucian Pintilie. And if it were up to me, Eugen Barbu’s novel Groapa (The Pit) would be internationally recognized. It’s top-level literature.

13. YOUR VIEWS ON SPIRITUALITY

For me, spirituality is a quiet inner space — where intuition, imagination and emotion meet. It’s the source of creativity and the sense of beauty that transcends logic.

14. YOUR VIEWS ON MONEY

I see money as a necessary evil — I don’t place much value on it, but I do recognize its role in life and its ability to make things possible.

15. AN INSPIRATION SOURCE YOU RECOMMEND FOR A YOUNG CREATIVE

I’m speaking strictly about young painters here. First: a thorough understanding of the international art market. Second: openness. Third: a strong idea, hard work and relentless perseverance. And last but not least, a rich cultural background — because great art cannot be created by ignorance. That’s the only way to succeed.
