Talent on the Riviera: The Romanian Creative Wave at Cannes

Twenty-two trending creators integrated their stories fluidly, in the fabric of the festival, at the latest edition of the Cannes Lions. Promoted through the very same private diplomacy efforts that have mapped Romania onto the global creative radar for the past 22 years, these talents have turned the local scene into a magnetic trendsetter and a powerful hub. Their impact far outpaces the country’s geographic and economic metrics within the EU, confidently punching above its weight compared to much larger global markets.

Meet the recent cohort

Adelina Butnaru, Alexa Lincu, Alexander Glonin, Alexandra Caravan, Andreea Moise, Andrei Câmpan, Daia Grigore, Daniel Lupu, Diana Necșulescu, Doriana Mărășoiu, Felicia Simion, Geo Chițac, Ioana Bulboacă, Irina Șelaru, Iulia Ignat, Lucian Prună, Margarita Bodarev, Narcisa Schiller, Oana Ispir, Roxana Ionescu, Teona Toderel, Yanna Zosmer were part of the official selection curated by Teodora Migdalovici, creativity ambassador, founder of TheAlternativeSchool Creative MBA, and local representative for four major international festivals (Dubai Lynx, Spikes Asia, Eurobest, Cannes Lions) since 2005.

On the Riviera, the school’s showcase expanded far beyond its bedrock programs, the continuous legacy of Young Lions supported by Ursus (featuring Andrian Brinoveanu and Dacian Neagu leading the charge in 2026), the Roger Hatchuel Academy (kudos to Julieta Calota), the ERA platform (chapeau, Maria Gaitan, with both categories backed by Invizibilii.ro), and the brand-new 2026 Young Lady platform supported by Ursus (the latest chapter in the highly successful Ladies First series).

Moving past traditional frameworks, this year was a celebration of the juicy, expressive complexity of contemporary visual languages, spotlighting the most memorable pieces from Romanian fine artists, photographers, and illustrators, deserving to be celebrated on the international stage.

Elegant simplicity for impactful private diplomacy

While global representation models vary, Romania’s strength lies in agile, private diplomacy, turning challenges into strategic masterstrokes. For over two decades, our pioneering mission has been to champion an updated, effervescent, and contemporary national identity. To discover, cultivate, and launch Romanian talent into a hyper-dense global ecosystem, here massive brands deploy endless resources, we must design precisely for the fast-paced reality of the Croisette.

Facing international delegates with an insatiable appetite for rapid-fire, diverse information, the ultimate strategy simply had to be a masterclass in elegant simplicity.

Romanian Art as an icebreaker on the world’s creative stage

Postcards featuring curated artworks from the "Meet Romanian Talent on the French Riviera" collection became the ultimate bridge. On the back, a simple QR code opened up a whole new universe for international delegates. It offered them an exclusive window into award-winning local campaigns that have defined Romania’s taste for progress at the festival over the years, showcasing a highly distinct industry style. The portal also unlocked access to the first editions of LadiesFirst and introduced them to Romanian creatives ready to act as insider guides across Romania’s cities and countryside. This high-quality, peer-to-peer connection offers talented foreigners a chance to discover the country through a lens that completely bypasses mainstream tourism and TripAdvisor platforms, filtered instead by a fellow creative who speaks their exact professional language.

A seasoned eye, international expertise, and sharp curatorial instinct turned "Meet Romanian Talent on the French Riviera" into yet another breakout platform.

The spark of inspiration came during the previous festival editions, following a highly successful pilot program with Georgiana Chițac Benoist, an ERA scholarship recipient. Georgiana’s illustrations, paired with traditional Romanian proverbs, were designed to g

ive international creatives a clever shortcut into the local cultural spirit. They absolute stole the show. Delegates treated the proverb-adorned postcards like cosmic messages from the universe, interacting with them much like fortune cookies.

Within two minutes, the cards became the ultimate conversational icebreaker, an elegant pretext to discuss Romania and creativity, and a constructive Trojan horse ready to be activated any time after the festival via the QR code. To top it off, delegates were so captivated by the sheer quality of the artwork that many promised to frame their postcard, keeping it as a signed piece of souvenir art straight from the festival.

Romanian Talent celebrated Across Asia

The wave traveled to Asia, as well. At Jolbors in Tashkent, AdFest in Thailand, and in Colombo for Elevate Sri Lanka, the very same activation came alive. This time, the postcards were amplified by Romanian visual art integrated directly into Tedi Migdalovici’s keynote talks and trainings. She took the stage as a speaker, trainer, and jury member. The showcase delighted international audiences who possessed highly trained creative eyes on one hand, and a continuous hunger to discover alternative cultures through imagery on the other. The Asian audiences applauded the work of Albert Kaan, Andrei Nicolescu, Daniel Lupu, Daniel Strugariu, Doriana Mărășoiu, Georgiana Chițac, Oana Ispir and Teona Toderel, subtly integrated into the slides or printed on postcards. Awed reactions and compliments followed, with praise for the visual narratives in Romanian code, arriving even in Chinese.

Why the Strict Focus on Talents Fluent in Visual Languages?

Because visuals possess the unique power to be simultaneously deeply endemic and entirely universal. Because sight is the oldest sense celebrated at the festival, dating back to the era when only film, print, and outdoor existed and it remains one of the most potent. Because in a sea of luxury beaches, corporate booths, secret gardens, and clifftop villas, all running on astronomical budgets - a single piece of beautifully printed paper, with a special texture, can achieve far more than any endless flow of rosé. Because in a world threatened by predictability, we desperately need clever shortcuts into the human soul, small explosions of delight ready to carve out lasting memories. Last but not least, because the creative skills of this community in Romania are nothing short of remarkable; they command far more interest, deeper reverence, and bolder collaborations from major brands and elite agencies with significant accounts.

With AI blooming, we are a step into a provocative future, and in the architecture of any forward-thinking creative department, moving beyond standard art directors, typographers, and graphic designers is no longer optional.

Room must be intentionally carved out for collaborations with exceptional photographers like Felicia Simion and Adi Bulboacă, with illustrators who shake you out of autopilot, and with fine artists, ceramicists, and practitioners of related disciplines, such as animation and, why not, sculpture.

A word from the artists

“I love creating characters that tell stories. Initiatives like these help stories created in Romania find their way to audiences in other corners of the world,” said Adelina Butnaru, Phd, UNARTE teacher, awarded Illustrator - The Most Beautiful Book in Romania.

“I believe that promoting Romanian talent should be a boundless endeavor. The voices of our creators need to be empowered to reach beyond national borders, making every platform that provides visibility and amplifies their international presence vital. The further these voices resonate, the more they help redefine the Romanian artistic scene on the global stage, a community that rightfully belongs in international cultural initiatives," said Alexa Lincu, Mural Artist, winner of the Un-hidden Romania open call for urban regeneration and finalist in the Our Fence, Your Perfect Art Playground public art competition.

“Promoting Romanian talent in international contexts means building bridges between cultures, opening new opportunities, and strengthening Romania’s recognition on the global cultural stage. Every appearance in an international setting contributes to building a stronger, more authentic image of Romania, while paving the way for new generations of creators and professionals," said Alexander Glonin, known for his unique style blending retro futurism, sci-fi & humanity-related themes in the context.

“Lobbying for Romanian talent on global stages, especially in physical form, is an important and helpful initiative for Romanian artists in an era of online image oversaturation and shrinking attention spans. I believe the postcard format is an excellent choice - it serves as a keepsake from Romania, functions as a business card for the artist, and can even be framed," said Alexandra Caravan, a Bucharest-based illustrator known for her book design concepts and her exclusive official product collaborations with Cărturești.

"When I started out, Instagram was still a space where taking a leap of faith to publish your work meant easily gaining visibility among like-minded individuals worldwide. Today, that organic connection is largely lost, as social media has shifted toward an algorithmic lottery favoring mass information consumption. Initiatives that facilitate meaningful, direct connections with people from diverse geographic and cultural backgrounds are invaluable, serving both established artists and those just beginning their journeys," said Andreea Moise, a highly awarded illustrator whose work has earned a Bright Prize at the Cheltenham Illustration Awards and consecutive longlist honors at the AOI World Illustration Awards.

“I am certain that Romanian talent does not lack value, but rather visibility. Initiatives like Lobby for Romanian Talent by the Alternative School’s Creative MBA create genuine opportunities where artists' work is not only seen more clearly but also enters a dialogue with an international community. For me, having our work circulate within these contexts offers more than just exposure - it confirms that the stories we build here are relevant anywhere," said Andrei Campan, PAN Studio founder and highly awarded visual artist, illustrator, and Animation Director, whose studio practice includes a 2026 artist residency at GlogauAIR in Berlin and a recent profile in the Swedish art magazine Paletten.

"The creative output of any smaller nation holds incredible value, and Romania is no exception. The authenticity and novelty that Eastern European creators bring to the table have repeatedly proven to be deeply engaging to global audiences. Within this region, Romania boasts a unique history shaped by its distinct blend of cultural influences. Any effort to promote our culture is commendable and provides vital support to the Romanian arts community," said Daniel Lupu, a Falmouth University illustration alumnus whose playful, conceptual style has earned him a shortlist spot at the World Illustration Awards and honors at the 3×3 Illustration Awards.

“I believe that Romanian talent, above all else, needs platforms where it can be seen. Every international presentation, exhibition, or project does more than just promote an individual author-it helps build a more robust narrative around Romania's collective creativity. I am glad to be part of initiatives that establish these bridges and amplify Romanian creators before a global audience. I have always appreciated that The Alternative School has gone beyond competitions, creating tangible contexts where Romanian creativity can truly engage with international communities," said Doriana Marasoiu, an award-winning graphic designer and illustrator who secured Second Place at the ASKA Young Designers Awards during Romanian Design Week and has exhibited globally, including at Graphic Days Torino.

"Regarding the promotion of Romanian talent internationally, I believe initiatives like The Alternative School Creative MBA have an impact that extends far beyond the immediate benefit to the participants. By promoting Romanian creatives in international contexts, they unlock new opportunities for individual artists while simultaneously helping build a cohesive and sophisticated image of the Romanian creative scene. I am grateful to be among the creators spotlighted by this initiative, and I am glad to join my peers in representing Romanian creativity beyond our borders," said Iulia Ignat, a prominent illustrator who officially represented Romania at the Bologna Children's Book Fair and has earned Honorable Mentions at the Sharjah Children's Book Illustration Awards (UAE) and the Tapirulan Contest (Italy).

“We are the descendants of Brancusi, Grigorescu, Luchian or Tonitza, and today we have Adrian Ghenie, Geta Brătescu or Șerban Savu, to name a few. Our cultural heritage and talent are essential pieces that complete and unite the puzzle of World Culture," said Margarita Bodarev, a self-taught watercolor portrait artist celebrated for her highly expressive, layered emotional works whose paintings have successfully entered public auctions.

“Romanian talent deserves to be discovered, promoted, and leveraged, especially in the current context and in the era of AI. There are a lot of incredible Romanian artists and their creativity deserves to be seen by the entire world”, said Roxana Ionescu, PhD, Head of Stage Design at UNArte Bucharest, internationally award-winning scenographer, and visual artist., indexed on global art platforms like ArtFacts and MutualArt, winner of the Interdoll International Festival Award, and critically featured in the bilingual contemporary art publication Art Magazine.

Private diplomacy for the world's cultures

Our deep love for intercultural dialogue led us to take the iconic Japanese gunbai and reimagine it as a unique creation. This custom piece featured a visual tribute to one of Asahi’s most celebrated, award-winning campaigns, conceived as a special gift for everyone who attended Identity & Culture: Asian Creativity, taking place at EY Headquarters, just before the festival.

We then took this unique fan to Cannes, arriving just as every brand on the Croisette, anticipating the heatwave, launched their own fan activations. In a vast sea of generic folding fans, our Asia-inspired, Asahi-fueled gunbai - born in the creative labs of The Alternative School’s Creative MBA, passed once again the test of originality, standing out as the most unexpected, avant-garde silhouette in the crowd.
